We're in Franktown (South Island New
Zealand near Queenstown) Great trip. Pictures = Sabra cooking pancakes
at tea time at a convoy break, Dan at a French Cafe in France
(reenactment at Warbird over Wannaka air show)
I'm rolling with the Armistice100 Convoy and having a ball.
There is a special dynamic when you convoy and this one is next level, being based on all the experience of convoys in the USA. The whole way things work just makes sense and makes life so easy! We have an amazing bunch of Americans with us who are just the nicest, most positive people you could meet. They are from all over the US, in fact representing pretty much the four corners of the US. Kenny is the Trail Officer and calls the moves over the radio with a lovely drawl and always a caring attitude. Peter Haigh is doing an outsanding scouting job to organise the right stops at the right times. Paul Baptist is underworked in Recovery but we are all glad to have that section being well led. Peter Yates as Convoy Commander is very well supported by this team. I thought the North Island segment would be boring but how wrong was I? Three Defence Bases trying to outdo each other in looking after us. (I think Linton won!) What a priviledge to stay on base and see behind the scenes, especially the artifacts and the workshops. I may never get to sit in the drivers seat of a LAV again, let alone talk to the bloke who was there during evaluation and procurement and knows the LAV inside out. We are at Haast tonight and almost at the halfway mark. I am amazed at how many people are tagging in and out of the convoy, making the most of the opportunity to get involved. Harry is probably king of this after doing the NI leg, flying home form Wellington, the rejoing us at Queenstown. Hard luck prize so far goes to Chris Flegg. after a total restoration of his Chev Radio Shack, it went up in steam and had to be left behind in Palmerston North. Bernie (and Raewyn for awhile) Ward joined us. Tom Grace flew into Blenheim and is riding along. Kerrie joined me for the SI leg in Blenheim as well.
